house extension heworth
We provided a full architectural service for the remodelling and extension of a terraced townhouse in the Heworth area of York. Set within a conservation area, the Victorian property had previously been extended beyond the original off-shot extension. Our scheme removes this addition to replace it with a new half-vaulted music room that opens onto the existing urban garden. Internally the house has been thermally improved and the rear ground floor spaces altered to create a new open plan kitchen, dining and family room with access to a landscaped courtyard.
Bespoke furniture has been designed throughout for storage and as window seating. Externally, the existing off-shot has been overclad with an oak timber slatted screen with existing openings unblocked or enlarged to create the new side entrance door and secure, brightly lit circulation overlooking the redesigned courtyard garden. The new masonry wall uses a contrasting brick to the existing house and is constructed with a geometric relief pattern (our interpretation of monk’s bond coursing) that acknowledges the dentil coursing on the existing bay window to the dining room.
The project was completed in November 2024.
